"Christmas Time Is Here" was written by Lee Mendelson and Vince Guaraldi for the 1965 TV special A Charlie Brown Christmas, one of the first animated Christmas specials produced for network TV in the United States. Because the song became a hit, two versions were included on the album: an instrumental version by Vince Guaraldi Trio’s and the beautiful, slightly out-of-tune voices of the children’s choir from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Those children today are men and women 50 years older.

About a month before it aired, Lee Mendelson, who produced the special, decided it might work better with some words in the Vince Guaraldi version, so he wrote the lyric in about 10 minutes sitting at his kitchen table. "It was a poem that just came to me," he told PRI in 2014. "Never changed the words to this day. It was only about a minute long."

CBS "didn't think jazz fit properly," Mendelson recalls. The network also wanted professional child actors to do the voices of the characters, not the untrained youngsters Mendelson recruited.He says the network also objected to the adult themes; they didn't think the topics of materialism and faith were appropriate for children.

Despite their concerns and after a few cosmetic changes, CBS aired the program. It was a hit.
